Certificate in Fundamentals of Software Development (Minor Award)

About the Course

The aim of this programme is to give candidates the requisite skills and knowledge to have a sound technical foundation in computing. Those who successfully complete the course will have an opportunity to progress onto particular areas such as web development, networking and information systems. The modules proposed in software (Java), Systems Analysis and Business and Information Systems will provide students with an understanding of technical issues in computing. Assessment is via practicals, assignment and final examination.

Entry Level

If under 23 years applicants must have a grade D3 in a minimum of five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examinations, (this must include Maths and English/Irish) or a FETAC Level 5 qualification or equivalent. Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempted from this requirement and are eligible to apply. All applicants must have competence in spoken and written English. Eligible candidates may be interviewed.

Career Opportunities

Due to a decline in interest in computing at undergraduate level current provision at full-time undergraduate level will not be sufficient to meet demand. Small businesses in particular can find it difficult to hire and maintain qualified IT graduates. At the same time many people in the workforce have an interest in IT, see the excellent career opportunities and are seeking a path which can lead to IT qualifications.

Successful participants will earn 15 credits towards the Higher Certificate in Computing. Successful completion of this set of modules will allow students to access other programmes such as the web management. Students will also be eligible to apply for a BSc in Information Technology Management in part-time mode.

Fees & Funding

€825 (Inclusive of ITT Dublin registration fee and examination fee). If completing individual modules/ groups of modules the individual module fee is €300 plus the ITT Dublin registration fee of €30 and an examination fee of €15 per module examination (up to a maximum of €70 per academic year).
