Department of Computing - Research Success
The Department of Computing, IT Tallaght is delighted with its recent success in attracting support for its research programmes. With over €350,000 in funding attracted in recent weeks the Department of Computing now has a platform to develop its research activity into a significant activity in the South Dublin area.
Among the projects launching this month is an Enterprise-Ireland funded joint research project with the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies, Dublin in the area of Supercomputing Resource Management and Load Demand Forecasting. ‘IBM are the world leaders in supercomputing. This is an exciting opportunity which will give the research students a deep insight into Blue Gene supercomputing technology.’ Says Dr. John Burns (john.burns@ittdublin.ie ) of the Department of Computing ITT Dublin.
Also launching this month is a research project looking into using ontologies to enrich e-learning. This project, supervised by Patricia Magee (patricia.magee@ittdublin.ie), comes under the umbrella of the ‘Ontologies for E-learning’ Special Interest Group at ITT Dublin. According to Dr. John Cardiff (john.cardiff@ittdublin.ie ), head of the group, ‘The Group has formed close ties with the Natural Language Engineering Lab of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain as well as other groups in T.C.D. and University of St. Petersburg, Russia. This project will build on our existing work and represents an exciting research opportunity.
Finally in collaboration with the Department of Experimental Physics in NUI Maynooth the department is launching a project focused at analysing images generated by terahertz security scanning systems. ‘Terahertz waves have the potential to detect non-metallic items in a way which other scanners just cannot do. This is an exciting research area and the potential for these new systems is very significant’ Says Dr. David White of the Department Computing in ITT Dublin.
‘It’s not just the project funding obtained by the department which is exciting but also the range and quality of research partnerships which the department has forged which provides significant opportunities for future researchers.’ According to Dr. Barry Feeney, Head of Department of Computing. ‘This funding means that we will now be working with international and national leaders in the areas of computing and computer science’. Anyone interested in the computing research opportunities at ITT Dublin should contact the project supervisors outlined above or Dr. Barry Feeney (barry.feeney@ittdublin.ie ), Head of Department, Department of Computing, ITT Dublin.
