A new competition seeking to foster entrepreneurship in students has been launched by The Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) and the South Dublin County Enterprise Board.

Students with lightbulb1 The inaugural Student Synergy Awards 08 invites students from ITT Dublin to come up with inventive business ideas and to devise a business plan outlining the development process for their proposed product or service. Thousands of euro in cash prizes is on offer for the winning entries.

Students at ITT Dublin are invited to submit an initial form with a brief description of their proposed entrepreneurial project by the 31st of October 2008. Feedback will be given on proposals and students will be assisted in forming teams. Click the Student Ent'prise Flyer to download the competition flyer and application form.

ITT Dublin has devised the competition in a bid to foster creativity and innovation in budding entrepreneurs among the entire student body at the institution. An expert panel, made up of representatives from ITT Dublin, The South Dublin County Enterprise Board, Cruickshank Intellectual Property Attorneys and external industry experts, will provide feedback and support to students throughout the competition process.

The deadline for submission for the final business plan is February 2009. Short listed entries will compete in a public final in March 2009. The three winning entries will progress to the Enterprise Ireland’s National Student Enterprise Awards to compete for the chance to win further cash prizes for their innovative business plans.

According to John Vickery, Registrar of ITT Dublin,

“ITT Dublin is proud to launch the inaugural Student Synergy Awards. The aim of this initiative is to encourage students from the Schools of Business & Humanities, Science & Computing and Engineering to work together to develop their ideas for original products and services. With great cash prizes on offer, we’re urging all students at ITT Dublin to get thinking about products and services they see a gap for in the market and we anticipate the competition will be a huge success.”

According to Loman O’Byrne, Chief Executive of the South County Dublin Enterprise Board

“The South County Dublin Enterprise Board believe all students should have the chance to learn about starting their own business and thanks to our partners in the Synergy Centre and ITT Dublin, this is now in place. The Student Synergy Awards helps integrate learning in a practical and realistic way and encourages students from different disciplines to work together, as would be the case in a real-life working environment. We believe that through this unique initiative, students will acquire the necessary skills to develop their entrepreneurial ideas and identify opportunities to start up their own businesses in the future.”
